Durch von Roma und Sinti selbst erzählten Gegengeschichten schafft RomArchive eine im Internet international zugängliche, verlässliche Wissensquelle, die Stereotypen und Vorurteilen mit Fakten begegnet. Die Idee für RomArchive basiert auf einer intensiven Recherche und zahlreichen Interviews, die die Projektinitiatorinnen Franziska Sauerbrey und Isabel Raabe europaweit mit Künstler_innen, Kurator_innen, Aktivisten_innen und Wissenschaftler_innen der Minderheit geführt haben. Die auf ständigen Zuwachs angelegten Sammlungen des Archivs spiegelt exemplarisch die enorme Bandbreite und Diversität von kulturellen Identitäten und nationalen Eigenheiten wider, anstatt ein realitätsfremdes Bild einer homogenen »Roma-Kultur« zu vermitteln. Ermöglicht wurde dies durch die Kulturstiftung des Bundes. In vielen Gesprächen mit Roma und Sinti wurde deutlich der Bedarf formuliert, einen international zugänglichen Ort zu schaffen, der die Kulturen und Geschichten von Roma und Sinti sichtbar macht, um auf diese Weise den beständigen Fremdbeschreibungen und Stereotypen mit einer von Sinti und Roma selbst erzählten Gegengeschichte zu begegnen. Das Prinzip des „Romani Leadership“ wurde in der Projektentwicklung von RomArchive konsequent umgesetzt: In allen entscheidenden Positionen haben Roma und Sinti das Archiv gestaltet. Die am Projekt Beteiligten – mit den verschiedenen Arbeitsgruppen etwa 150 Akteure aus 15 Ländern europaweit und darüber hinaus – bildeten ein weltweites Netzwerk von Kulturschaffenden, Wissenschaftler_innen und, Aktivist_innen, die hauptsächlich zur Minderheit zählen. Ein internationaler Beirat unterstützte und beriet die Kurator_innen und bestimmte die strategischen Richtlinien des Projekts. Er bestand aus Künstler_innen, Wissenschaftler_innen und Aktivist_innen. Das Archiv wurde 2020 mit dem Grimme Online Award (Kategorie Wissen und Bildung) ausgezeichnet. - [Engl.:] RomArchive, the Digital Archive of the Roma, makes arts and cultures of Roma visible, illustrating their contribution to European cultural history. Through narratives told by Roma themselves, RomArchive creates a reliable source of knowledge that is internationally accessible on the internet, thereby countering stereotypes and prejudices with facts. The idea for RomArchive was based on intensive research and numerous interviews that the project initiators Franziska Sauerbrey and Isabel Raabe conducted with Romani artists, curators, activists and academics across Europe. This was made possible by the German Federal Cultural Foundation. Over the course of many conversations with Roma, it became clear that there was a need to create an internationally accessible site that makes Romani cultures and histories visible; this would make it possible to counter the recurrent stereotypes and entrenched prejudices with narratives told by Roma themselves. Conceptualised to accommodate continuous growth, the Archive’s collection reflects the enormous breadth and diversity of cultural identities and national characteristics, while avoiding the pitfall of presenting an unrealistic picture of a homogenous ‘Roma culture’. This is the first time that the wealth of this multifaceted artistic and cultural production – which is centuries-old but remains vibrantly alive today – has been made publicly accessible and visible on such a large scale. The principle of ‘Romani Leadership’ was followed in developing the RomArchive project: in all the key positions, Roma have defined and designed the Archive. Those involved in the project – including the assorted working groups this adds up to some 150 people from fifteen countries across Europe and further afield – formed a global network of cultural actors, scholars and activists, most of whom belong to the minority group. An international advisory board both supported and advised the curators and formulated the strategic guidelines for the project. It was comprised of artists, scholars and activists.
