Counterfactual thoughts are thoughts that describe an alternative past and help people to learn for the future. This thesis provides two new aspects for counterfactual research. The research so far has only looked at selfdetermined situations but not at situations that are influenced by others. However, family and friends influence people’s daily behavior. Five experiments show that people generate counterfactuals not only in situations where they are free to choose what to do, but also in situations where other people influence their behavior. Former research also disagreed upon which variables (especially commission and omission) of a situation lead to more counterfactuals than others. This thesis gives new input for this dispute, as specific content domains are responsible for varying findings. In different situations people inherit a different norm for their behavior. For example, in health situations the norm is a commission, e.g., that people act to protect their health. A deviation from a norm leads to counterfactual thinking, e.g. the person did not act to protect her health. The present thesis integrates the new findings into a new model of counterfactual thinking that explains different content domains and the influence of other persons on one’s behavior. These aspects have a crucial impact on the generation of counterfactuals. | ||
| 520 | |a Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit den Auswirkungen sozialen Einflusses und spezifischen Situationen auf kontrafaktische Gedanken. Kontrafaktische Gedanken sind Gedanken, die eine alternative Vergangenheit beschreiben und helfen Personen für die Zukunft zu lernen. Diese Dissertation bietet zwei neue Aspekte für die kontrafaktische Forschung. Die Forschung bis dato hat sich nur auf selbstbestimmte Situationen beschränkt und Situationen, die von anderen beeinflusst werden außer Acht gelassen. Jedoch beeinflussen Familie und Freunde das tägliche Verhalten. Fünf Experimente zeigen, dass Personen nicht nur in Situation in denen sie frei wählen konnten, sondern auch in Situation, die von anderen Personen beeinflusst werden, kontrafaktische Gedanken generieren. Die bisherige Forschung war sich uneinig welche Variablen (v.a. commission und omission)einer Situation zu vermehrten kontrafaktischem Denken führt. Diese Dissertation stellt einen neuen Beitrag zu diesem Disput dar, da spezifische Inhaltsbereiche verantwortlich für unterschiedliche Ergebnisse sind. Personen haben in verschiedenen Situationen verschiedene Normen für ihr Verhalten. Zum Beispiel ist die Norm in gesundheitlichen Situationen eine Handlung, ergo dass Personen etwas tun um ihre Gesundheit zu beschützen. Eine Abweichung von der Norm führt zu kontrafaktischem Denken, z. B. die Person handelte nicht um ihre Gesundheit zu beschützen. Die vorliegende Dissertation integriert die neuen Ergebnisse in ein neues Modell kontrafaktischen Denkens, das verschiedene Inhaltsbereiche und den Einfluss anderer Personen auf das eigene Verhalten erklärt. Diese Aspekte haben einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Generierung von kontrafaktischen Gedanken. | ||
