| Summary: | Constructions of Mediterranean Insularities The concept of insularity is as challenging as it is important in interdisciplinary research. This volume focuses on the Mediterranean and the specific "insular" dimension attributed to its archipelagos and islands. The term "insularity" (accordingly "Insularität" in German; "insularité" in French) originates from the Renaissance period, but did not become commonly used until its recent reemergence in modern research. It is closely connected with the question of specific biological, economic, political, military, cultural or religious phenomena on islands, which result precisely from the fact that they are completely surrounded by water and from their limited resources, both of which are fundamental defining principles. On closer inspection, however, these seemingly natural criteria also reveal specific modes of constructing insularity in texts and images practised from Antiquity to the present day. The volume contains a number of fresh approaches to this fascinating phenomenon, presented at a workshop organized by the Centre of Mediterranean Studies at Ruhr Universitaet Bochum in June 2013. The volume is structured in four sections dedicated to "imaginations", "geographical situations", "transitority and comparison" as well as to "persistence and identity".
