Zusammenfassung:Shortly after chloroform anesthesia was first performed, it was used experimentally on childbearing women in the mid-nineteenth century. Pain during childbirth posed a particular challenge to obstetricians. According to some contemporary theories of pain, women were considered particularly sensitive to pain, others, however, regarded women being able to bear pain easily. In obstetrics, special attention was paid to the pain women endured in labour. Academic obstetricians set out to alleviate the pain of childbirth or to take it away altogether. This article uses an intersectional and praxeological theoretical perspective to reconstruct the meaning attributed to pain during childbirth in the still young academic obstetrics and explore how the handling of birth pain was portrayed.
