| Zusammenfassung: | Vagueness is often presented as a problem in the public debate about appropriate use of language. The diagnosis of linguistic vagueness with respect to a lexeme or an utterance usually presupposes an intention - thus also the title of this thematic issue »ambiguations« with its reference to »Ambiguation as a strategy« (Call for Paper, p. 1). Ambiguation presupposes an (active) agent that ambiguates - presumably intentionally. Here, the unambiguous is insinuated as the default value of linguistic communication. Pragma-linguistically, this focuses on structurally paradigmatic and mentalistically contrastive aspects of definiteness and non-definiteness in language action. The subject of this contribution is the property of vagueness inherent in language, which is given by the arbitrariness of the expression side and the content side and is defused by conventionalization of language use. Therefore, two sides of the unification, the pragma-semiotic grounding are shown. For this purpose, the focus lies on the active role of the receiving individuals in understanding communication processes which make something ambiguous. |
