Description
Summary:This thematic volume, with contributions by Russian, Ukrainian, and German historians, focuses on hitherto under-researched groups of civilian victims of World War II, taking in victims of Nazi occupation in the occupied Soviet territories as well as victims of Stalinism in the regions liberated by the Red Army. At the heart of the volume are the authors’ endeavors to make the voices and agency of the victims clear in their contributions and to approach the victims’ experiences through victim-centered perspectives. In doing so, they reveal ambivalences and gray areas between victim and perpetrator experiences, in addition to the double dictatorship experience that some victims shared. Furthermore, the contributions also open up some comparative perspectives on how German and Soviet judicial authorities dealt with crimes committed against Soviet civilian victims. The volume’s contributions provide insights into new archival sources from Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, and German archives, including former intelligence service archives.
