520 |a Bulimia nervosa is a severe mental disorder imposing a substantial burden on the individual and society. Despite requiring specialized treatment, individuals with bulimia nervosa often do not receive evidence-based therapy. The recent findings by Hamatani et al provide support for the effectiveness of a therapist-guided, web-based intervention for bulimia nervosa. The study reported moderate to strong reductions in binge eating episodes, compensatory behaviors, and eating disorder psychopathology, with significantly higher remission rates in the intervention group compared with usual care at psychiatric clinics in Japan. However, no substantial treatment effects were observed in general mental health outcomes, including quality of life and comorbid depressive or anxiety symptoms. The 12-week modular web-based program was tailored to Japanese culture and integrated components of classical cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders as well as elements of mindfulness, meta-cognitive training, anxiety exposure, imagery rescripting, and dietary training. Overall, participants reported moderate to high satisfaction with the intervention and a moderate score for therapeutic alliance.
