| Summary: | Respiratory tract infections (RTI) are the most frequent indications for antibiotic treatment in children, particularly in outpatient and emergency department settings. Various pediatric scientific societies and the Professional Association of Pediatricians in Germany developed these consensus recommendations, which describe the symptoms, diagnostics and best practice antibiotic treatment of the most common RTI in children (excluding community-acquired pneumonia). These recommendations are aimed at supporting pediatricians in the restrictive use of antibiotics, selection of the best option for treatment and with respect to the shortest possible duration of treatment as recommended in clinical guidelines. In addition, the recommendations describe RTI for which no antibiotic treatment should be carried out and for those where antibiotic treatment is only rarely necessary. |
