Summary:Background: Within the wide-ranging world of radiation therapy, particle therapy is a treatment option for specific indications; however, as it is not as commonly used as conventional radiotherapy with photons and so far only offered at a few centers, the possibilities, advantages and disadvantages are often not as present in the general conciousness as is the case with “established” forms of radiotherapy. Objective: This article provides information on the differences between particle and photon irradiation and gives an overview of some indications for particle therapy. Methods: This article is based on a selective literature search in PubMed on particle therapy.ResultsThere are an increasing number of indications for the use of particle therapy, accompanied by an improved body of evidence. Conclusion: Particle therapy has become an established therapeutic method with a growing number of indications.
