Die Schrift De antro Nympharum ist die längste aus der Antike erhaltene allegorische Deutung einer Stelle aus den Dichtungen Homers. Der neuplatonische Philosoph Porphyrios (späteres 3. Jh. n. Chr.) nutzt die Beschreibung der auf der Insel Ithaka gelegenen Nymphengrotte aus dem 13. Buch der Odyssee für eine faszinierende Auslegung, die Einblicke in Strategien und Wirkungsabsichten einer jahrhundertealten Homerexegese gibt und neuplatonische Aneignungsweisen der literarischen Tradition beispielhaft vor Augen führt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Fragen nach der Unsterblichkeit der Seele und der Unterscheidung von wahrnehmbarer und intelligibler Welt, die in den Essays unter astronomisch-astrologischen, literaturwissenschaftlichen, philosophischen, religionswissenschaftlichen und rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Aspekten kontextualisiert und erörtert werden. |
