Description
Summary:Based on observations and field research conducted in Donbass from 2014 to 2016, Dmytro Tytarenko examines the transformation of the official and non-official commemorative discourses of the Great Patriotic War (GPW). The fight against Nazism and victory over it became an integral part of both historical and official political discourse on the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), as evidenced in Victory Day celebrations, related traditions, and ceremonies, as did attempts to underline a direct continuity between the veterans of the GPW and the combatants of armed formations of the DPR. This chapter identifies how attitudes toward the conflicting sides depended on the ability and readiness of the authorities (Ukrainian or in the self-proclaimed republics) to take responsibility for the maintenance of numerous pensioners, including the GPW veterans or “Children of War.” Meanwhile, schools and other educational institutions play an essential role in memory politics, as do local mass media, rituals, and memorials of the GPW, and museums and exhibitions. This chapter shows how the mythologization and glorification of the GPW events are reproduced in the discourse of the current conflict.
