Trotz quantitativer Größe und qualitativer Vielfalt sind nichtreligiöse Gruppen von der Forschung bislang allerdings erst unzureichend in den Blick genommen worden. Gerade die Religionswissenschaft übersieht zumindest in struktureller Hinsicht das halbe Feld und den halben Diskurs, wenn sie nur die positiv religionsbezogenen Phänomene betrachtet. Die vorliegende Dissertation verortet sich in der religionswissenschaftlichen Nichtreligionsforschung und widmet sich der größten atheistischen online community der Welt, dem Onlineforum r/atheism im sozialen Medium Reddit. Das Forschungsdesign orientiert sich dabei am Charakter der dortigen Akteure als selbstreferentiellen und weltanschaulichen Atheistinnen und Atheisten. Entsprechend fragt die Studie schwerpunktmäßig nach den Identitätskonstruktionen in diesem Forum (kollektive Identität, Selbst- und Feinbilder, Othering) sowie nach der dort konstruierten atheistischen Weltanschauung (v. a. in Hinblick auf die Verständnisse von Religion, Nichtreligion und Wissenschaft, sowie auf die Menschen- und Geschichtsbilder). Dies geschieht methodisch mit einer mehrstufigen Qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse. In theoretischer Hinsicht kombiniert die Arbeit den relationalen Ansatz der Nichtreligionsforschung mit einem diskursiven Religionsbegriff. Im Ergebnis konnte erstmals im Detail gezeigt werden, wie online eine imagined atheist community gestiftet wird. Dies geschieht v. a. durch den Charakter des Forums als einer Selbsthilfegruppe sowie durch eine ausgeprägte Dichotomisierung zwischen der atheistischen In-Group und der imaginierten religiösen Out-Group. Darüber hinaus kann festgehalten werden, dass das Forum r/atheism durch einen ausgeprägten Religionsbezug geprägt und Teil des globalen Religionsdiskurses ist. Die Akteure stellen dabei eine charakteristische Fraktion innerhalb des weltweiten Aushandlungsprozesses um Religion dar. Dabei lässt sich das Forum als eine postchristliche Gemeinschaft erkennen, die sich u. a. durch ein aus dem Protestantismus stammendes „fundamentalistisches“ Religionsverständnis auszeichnet. Durch dieses und weitere inhaltliche Merkmale steht die Forumsgemeinschaft in ihrem Mainstream dem sog. Neuen Atheismus nahe, und unterscheidet sich von anderen gegenwärtigen Atheismen. A large and steadily growing segment of the global population is non-religious. Despite their significant numbers and diversity, however, non-religious groups have received insufficient attention in research to date. The academic study of religion, in particular, overlooks half the field and half the discourse—at least structurally—if it focuses solely on phenomena positively related to religion. This dissertation situates itself within the study of non-religion and focuses on the world’s largest online atheist community: the r/atheism forum on Reddit. The research design is informed by the nature of the participants as self-identifying atheists with a distinct worldview. Consequently, the study primarily examines identity construction within the forum (collective identity, self-images and images of the "other," and "othering") as well as the atheist worldview constructed there (particularly regarding understandings of religion, non-religion, and science, as well as conceptions of humanity and history). Methodologically, the study employs a multi-stage qualitative content analysis. Theoretically, it combines the relational approach of non-religion studies with a discursive concept of religion. The findings demonstrate in detail, for the first time, how an "imagined atheist community" is established online. This occurs primarily through the forum’s function as a support group and through a sharp dichotomy drawn between the atheist in-group and the imagined religious out-group. Furthermore, the study establishes that r/atheism is deeply defined by its relationship to religion and forms part of the global discourse on religion. The participants represent a distinctive faction within the worldwide process of negotiating the meaning of religion. The forum can be identified as a post-Christian community characterized, among other things, by a "fundamentalist" understanding of religion rooted in Protestantism. Due to this and other substantive characteristics, the forum community—in its mainstream—aligns closely with so-called New Atheism and differs from other contemporary forms of atheism.
