Hydroclimatic heterogeneity in Southwest China revealed from trace elements of a Medieval-to-modern stalagmite

The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and Little Ice Age (LIA) were key climate events of the past millennium. While prior studies have revealed the north-south hydroclimatic differences in monsoon China, spatial precipitation patterns within southern China remain poorly understood. We divided southern Chi...

Description
Summary:The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and Little Ice Age (LIA) were key climate events of the past millennium. While prior studies have revealed the north-south hydroclimatic differences in monsoon China, spatial precipitation patterns within southern China remain poorly understood. We divided southern China into three subregions (Southeast-South coast, central China, and Southwest China) and analyzed the trace elements (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca) of stalagmite FL2102 (Guizhou province, southwest China), alongside regional paleoclimate records. Key findings including: (1) Trace-elements ratios in stalagmite FL2102 effectively reflect variations in regional hydroclimate. (2) Against the context of ASM intensification during the MWP and weakening during the LIA, for stalagmite FL2102, the overall trends of the Ba/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios were similar, with greater amplitude variations during the MWP compared to the LIA. The Mg/Ca ratio exhibited relatively gentle fluctuations overall, except for several notable spikes during the MWP. (3) The observed regional disparities in precipitation patterns across southern China since the MWP underscore the inherent complexity of climatic and environmental systems.
