| Riassunto: | Normative conflicts occur when the prescriptions of different normative standpoints or domains issue opposing prescriptions. For instance, morally speaking, one ought to donate at least some of one’s money to charity. However, from the perspective of self-interest, prudence might demand that one spend these resources on other things, such as a luxurious vacation. Since both of these perspectives seem to matter, one is faced with a normative conflict: given that I morally ought to do one thing and prudentially ought to do another thing, what course of action should I perform simpliciter? This question of the so-called ought simpliciter or all things considered ought is at the heart of the dispute between normative monists and normative pluralists. While normative monists maintain that normative conflicts can be, at least sometimes, vindicated by an appeal to an ought simpliciter, normative pluralists deny that possibility. In her recent book, Mathea Slåttholm Sagdahl provides a comprehensive defence of normative pluralism which, on the one hand, rebuts the most common objections mounted against pluralism and, on the other hand, points to some overlooked resources to motivate pluralism against the monist rival. |
