40Ar/39Ar ages of polyhalite and langbeinite record multi-stage basin evolution in the Permian Werra-Fulda salt deposit (Germany)
We present a comprehensive 40Ar/39Ar dataset from 15 polyhalite and 13 langbeinite samples collected from the Thüringen and Hessen potash seams and associated rock-salt units of the Werra-Fulda basin (Central Germany). The aim is to constrain the post-deposional diagenetic, structural, fluid, metam...

| Sumario: | We present a comprehensive 40Ar/39Ar dataset from 15 polyhalite and 13 langbeinite samples collected from the Thüringen and Hessen potash seams and associated rock-salt units of the Werra-Fulda basin (Central Germany). The aim is to constrain the post-deposional diagenetic, structural, fluid, metamorphic, and magmatic processes. The 40Ar/39Ar ages cluster in three groups: Permian-Triassic; Triassic-Jurassic-Cretaceous, and Miocene. The langbeinite plateau ages of 251.2 ± 0.4 Ma - 249.7 ± 0.5 Ma is interpreted as crystallization of langbeinite during early diagenesis. The second plateau age group of langbeinite (146.5 ± 0.3 Ma - 142.6 ± 0.2 Ma) is located in the NW-SE-trending 2 km wide salt recrystallization zone that follows the structural trending of the normal faults forming the “Grabensystem Fulda-Großenlüder” and is interpreted to reflect fluid-assisted transformation of sylvinite and kieserite during Jurassic-Cretaceous tectonism. The third plateau age group range between 19.79 ± 0.07 Ma - 15.40 ± 0.39 Ma with a maximum between 17 and 18 Ma. The close spatial and temporal association with Miocene basic dikes indicates that magmatism caused widespread fluid-driven recrystallization of langbeinite and polyhalite, new growth of polyhalite along N-S-trending fractures and normal faults, and langbeinite growth by the transformation of sylvinite and kieserite. The three age populations record discrete stages in the tectono-thermal-fluid evolution of the basin, revealing that langbeinite and polyhalite act as robust 40Ar/39Ar-geochronometers capable of resolving multiple thermal and fluid overprints, and fluid induced new crystallization along fractures and normal faults, and salt mineral metamorphism in evaporite-bearing basins worldwide. |
